As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" category.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Several parts of the city showed an AQI exceeding 500, which equals 10x the healthy threshold established by the global health authority.

Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding acceptable standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Changes

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous smog that covers the capital as the cold season begins.

Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected regional leadership petitioned the judicial authority to seek a easing of the ban.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near Diwali, the concentration of dangerous particles in the air has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Diverse Contamination Sources

This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air arrives.

Medical and Financial Impact

The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in cancer.

Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for 10,000 untimely fatalities annually in the capital.
